Delightful Kollage Lace Scarf

During the 2009 Yarn Shop Hop, I traveled to a little yarn shop/ kids clothes shop in Minneapolis, Kansas called The Yarn Peddler where I stumbled upon some skeins of Kollage Yarns Delightful and I fell in love. The lady that owned the shop saw me eyeing the yarn and told me that it was one of her new favorites and that the yarn came with a copy of Anistasiaknits Delightful Lace Scarf pattern (seen here on ravelry) upon purchase. Sold! So, I purchased a skein in Celestial- a lavender-grey color with threads of shiny pink and green woven in because it reminded me of fairy dust or a unicorns tail and made me the happiest.

After I got the yarn home, I decided that I could not keep this yarn and it's glittery goodness all to myself, so I thought "who would like this glittery, soft, fairy dust inspired scarf more me?" and I instantly decided that this scarf has to belong to The Boy's older sister.

I knitted up this scarf during my "Fall Break" from work in only 4 days. Here's how it turned out:

Dr. Who Doll

My boyfriend's mother LOVES the BBC show Dr. Who and is particularly fond of the 10th Doctor played by David Tennant.

David Tennant as the 10th Doctor
Earlier this year, the Boy and I picked up a 10th Doctor Screwdriver from a British imports store for his mom and I knew that he was getting her a Dr. Who Telephone Booth Cookie Jar for Christmas. So, continuing on with the Dr. Who theme, I naturally decided to crochet a David Tennant/ Dr. Who doll to give to The Boy's mom for Christmas.

I used bits of yarn that I already had on hand and Tracy J's Dr. Who Doll pattern (seen here on ravelry and here). I even added his red trainers.

The Doctor posing under the Christmas Tree

He turned out so well, that I had a hard time parting with him. But, alas, I could not separate the Doctor from his Telephone Booth and Screwdriver (otherwise he might get overtaken by Daleks).

The Doctor was very well received on Christmas day (I believe there were squeals involved) and his mom snapped some additional photos of the Doctor posing with his Telephone Booth on Christmas Day.

Dad's Christmas Slippers

My dad has been a very good dad this year. He's been staying busy making home improvements, painting houses, and actively looking for work (is anyone looking for an accountant?). Although my dad has been home more often than he's ever been, it's been nice seeing my dad at my parent's house since I started working in my hometown this year. I know that I always have a place close to work where I can stop and get a hot meal or take a nap before I make the 40 minute drive home. And if I call ahead, dad will even have a pot of hot coffee waiting for me.

My dad also asked for a pair of felted slippers for Christmas. He said that when he was younger (like WAY back in the 70s) he'd owned a pair of gray felted slippers and he'd liked them so much, he'd worn them until they fell apart. So he wanted me to re-create them.

For dad's slippers I used 2 skeins of Patons Classic Wool in dark gray from Michaels, a J hook, and the felted men's slip-ons pattern (found here on ravelry and here). Like mom's slippers, after I had crocheted the slippers, I washed the slippers in the washing machine 3 times on hot in order to felt the slippers.

Mom's Christmas Slippers

For the past few weeks I have been crafting like a Christmas elf in order to give a few lucky family members some handcrafted Christmas presents. And now that they have all been delivered and happily received, I can show these gifts to you. Everyday this week I'll be showing off one of my handcrafted gifts, so check back often for updates.

To start off craft-week I'd like to begin with mom's Christmas slippers. This year my mom has been a very good lady: she's been working very hard at her 8-5 job, she helped out with some local political campaigns, and she's been the breadwinner in my parent's household. For Christmas my mom asked for a pair of felted slippers like she'd seen at a few of the yarn shops during the 2010 Yarn Shop Hop, so that's exactly what she got.

I used Lion Brand Fisherman's Wool from Michaels in Oak Tweed, a size J crochet hook, 2 eco friendly buttons from Hancock Fabrics, and the felted adult slip-ons pattern (found here on ravelry and here). After the slippers were crocheted, the slippers were put into the washing machine 3 times so that the wool would felt and the crochet stitches would disappear.

Here's how they turned out:

And Evening with David Sedaris

Hey remember that time that I went to the David Sedaris book signing at my local bookstore (If not click here)? Well, I braved the freezing temperatures to listen to David Sedaris's book chat over the PDA system outside of the bookstore, and I stood in line for over six hours, but gosh darn it, I got my books signed.

The book signing started at 6:30pm and there were so many people, that many with advanced tickets (like me) had to sit out in the cold. Luckily, the book store did have a cafe to warm up in and they were nice enough to provide free coffee and hot cocoa refills. David seemed very genuine and spent the same amount of time with each person. He asked everyone in line if they had a joke to share and he would share a few with each individual. By the time I got up to the front of the line (about 12:30pm on a work-night), I was so cold, tired, and nervous that my mouth was even shaking and I couldn't get a word out! But he was nice enough to share a few jokes with me. I bet the people at the end of the line didn't get through until after 1am. There was no way those people were going to make it to the midnight showings of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I.

Been to any good book signings lately? Let me know in the comments below.

What's Making Me Laugh: Kitten Mittens

I love It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia and this is one of my favorite clips. It kind of makes me want to get a kitten and knit it a pair of mittens. Tee hee! If you like what you see, you can catch full-episodes of the show on the FX Network or in syndication on Comedy Central.

What I Wore: 12/7/2010

It's been a really long time since I've done one of these posts. The last post was in September. Did you miss me?

Anyway, today was "wear white day" as part of my workplace's "10 Days That Cannot Be Named" (because my workplace isn't aloud to mention Christmas) and here is what I wore. I even wore a white coat, too.

Lands End Warm up America Blanket Squares

This fall, my local knitting circle decided to participate in the Lands' End Warm up America Campaign. Those that jumped in on the campaign wagon early (before October 1) and could commit to making 51 squares, like my knitting group, received FREE cones of Lands' End Feel Good yarn to knit or crochet blanket squares. Knitters/Crocheters then had the option of creating blankets themselves or mailing their finished squares in to be made into blankets given to those in need. Lands' End also provided the patterns (shown below) to complete the squares. Each square was to measure approx. 7 x 9 in.

I was able to complete 6 squares with my allotted balls of yarn (although only 4 are pictured below). I did one of each pattern, plus two striped ones in the basic knit stitch.

Are you doing any holiday crafting for charity this season? Please share in the comments below.

What I'm Listening To: Online Recomendations

The first video comes from a Yahoo Music blog titled The Oddest Collection of Celebrities Imaginable Lip Sync 'Let It Be'. The video was originally released to promote a the Norwegian "Gylne Tider" talk show. Obviously, whoever chose celebs had a fascination with 80s and 90s American pop-culture. Can you blame them?

The second video was originally posted by Oranges and Apples and is called 'Nowhere Near Here'. The video uses stop motion and a combination of light and stencils to create a dog made of light. You can learn more about the process here.

The song is Royksopp's 'What Else is There?'

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Over Thanksgiving break I saw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and I thought it was the best one yet except for the...

*SPOILER ALERT*

...CGI-Harry Potter/Hermione-monster sex scene. I don't consider myself a prude, but these characters are supposed to be 16 years old and we've been watching these characters since they were 11 years old. We don't want to see Hermione's side-boob!

Anyway, watching this film reminded me that I never shared my photos from the "Harry Potter Party" The Boy's family and I threw to celebrate the premiere of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince back in July 2009.

I'm in love...

This Thanksgiving weekend the Boy and I rented Kirby's Epic Yarn from our local video store and, let me tell you kids, I am in love! This game combines my love for crafting, gaming, and cute things in one compact disk. If you have a Wii and have not tried this game, GET IT NOW!!! And if you've got me on your x-mas list this year, consider this post a BIG hint ;)

What I'm Listening To: Fenech-Soler 'Lies'

This week I've been listening to Fenech-Soler 'Lies' on my Fashion.Music.Style magazine sampler. Fashion.Music.Style magazine is a British publication that reviews and promotes new (unsigned) and up-and-coming talent in fashion and music and is sold worldwide. I picked up my copy randomly on a recent trip to Borders and I love it! So, give Fenech-Soler a listen, and check out the magazine when you get a chance.

What I'm Listening To- Opening Bands

I just wanted to introduce you to a few of the opening bands that I saw over my Veteran's Day break.

What's Making Me Laugh: David Sedaris

David Sedaris will be passing through my hometown this week on his latest book tour to promote Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk. Most of you know that I'm a huge fan of his work (and if you need a reminder, click here), so of course I am super pumped! So, in honor of David Sedaris's visit to Kansas, check out this clip from the David Letterman show. It's hilarious!

Happy Veterans Day!'

Rocky Votolato- "White Daisy Passing"

Hi all!

On Monday I got a voice mail from an unknown number. When I listened to it, I learned that I'd won 2 free tickets to see Rocky Votolato in concert on Wednesday in my old college town. I'd completely forgotten that I'd entered the contest to win free tickets online through Mass Street Music, so that made winning that much more exciting and surprising!

As you may have read, I'd already planned on visiting my college town on Thursday to check out a concert by The Heavy. So now I'm going to see two shows during my Veteran's Day holiday!Hurray!

I also remembered to thank a U.S. Veteran today! Happy Veteran's Day, everyone!

A Rose for A Rose

My grandma Rose turned 91 way back in September. She'd asked for some new washcloths for her birthday, so I decided to knit some.

I knit the first washcloth using lil knit of this & that's Rose Dishcloth pattern and some white speckled Sugar n' Cream cotton yarn that I had on hand. If you look closely, you can kind of make out the rose pattern on the dishcloth. I wonder if the rose would have been more visible if I'd used a solid colored yarn :/

For the second washcloth, I used a new twist on dishcloth's Grandma's Favorite Dishcloth pattern and the same yarn. This was a very simple pattern to knit and only took me one afternoon to complete.

My grandma was really pleased with her gifts, although now she feels like they're too nice to use as wash cloths. So instead my grandma is keeping them around to use like coaster/doilies. What do you think?

What I'm Listening To: The Heavy "How You Like Me Now?"

I'm super excited! The Heavy will be visiting my former college town this week on my day off from work and I've already got my tickets to the show! I've been in love with this band since I first heard them on that sock monkey commercial and I've been listening to them ever since. Have a listen and I hope you'll love them too.

Yarn Hoppin' Weekend

This weekend, my parents, two of their friends, and I piled into my parent's van and traveled across Kansas for their 4th annual Yarn Shop Hop. Our travels took us to yarn shops Winfield, Wichita, Hutchinson, Newton, El Dorado, Lindsborg (a little Swedish town) , Salina, and Abilene (home of Dwight D. Eisenhower).

We stopped for lunch at a place called Kirby House in Abilene and tried out their world famous coconut and walnut bread.

How was your weekend?
