What I Wore: 06/25/2010

Wednesday, June 30, 2010
Moomin shirt: Gift from the Boy's trip to Finland
Skirt: Kenneth Cole from Name Brand Clothing Bag: Reversible Bag, made by me
Shoes, watch and Ped socks, Target

I had a pretty fabulous and productive weekend. I got to reconnect with a former roomie that I haven't seen in a few years (but since they're moving to my town, hopefully that will change in the up coming months), I had a two day sew-a-thon with The Boy's mom, and I crafted and baked up some surprises for my dad's 60th birthday/"welcome home parents from vacation" day.

How was your weekend?

My Tuxedo Bib

Thursday, June 24, 2010
For New Years 2010 I made myself a tuxedo bib (as seen on Threadbanger and BurdaStyle) but I never posted any pictures...until now.

It's a little stiff around the collar and it needs a bit of styling prep to hang right, but it's still pretty cute and can dress up any outfit.

If you're interested in making one of you're own, check out the tutorials at BurdaStyle or at Threadbanger.

Sarah Went Shopping

Wednesday, June 23, 2010
This weekend I did a little shopping.

First, I checked out Hancock Fabrics semi-annual sale where many fabrics were half off. Here's what I got:

2 yards red gingham
4 yards navy gingham
1 yard white eyelet
1/4 black cotton

Let's just say that I have big plans for these babies.

Next, I went to my local Goodwill and Name Brand Clothing stores.

I got:
A brown woven and navy and white striped belt (Goodwill)
A blue striped American Eagle button down (Goodwill)
A polka dot khaki skort (Goodwill)
A Kenneth Cole Reaction black and white stripe skirt (Name Brand)

I think that I made out like a bandit.

My May Frock by Friday

Tuesday, June 22, 2010
A few weeks ago, I told you that I was working on May's Frock by Friday sew-a-long by Grosgrain. Well, I finished the dress and I finally have some pictures to show off.

I really couldn't have done it without following Grosgrain's day-to-day tutorials. Overall, I'm really pleased with the results. I love my new, cute, brightly colored summer fun dress!

Teeth

Monday, June 21, 2010
Today I read an article about how a South African doctor invented a female condom to help prevent rape. The device is inserted into the woman like a female condom or tampon, only it has jagged rows of teeth hooks inside that will attach to a man and can only be removed by a doctor. Although the device hurts and makes a man unable to pee or walk, the device doesn't break the skin or enable any fluid exposure (see CNN). It's intended to be used by women who think they may be at risk for rape.

The article reminded me of the 2007 movie Teeth

I am all for the prevention of rape and I find it sad that women in South Africa have to live in so much fear of being raped that such a device had to be invented. However, I personally, cannot imagine putting in such a device anytime I entered a potentially dangerous situation, because I don't know precisely when I would be entering a potentially dangerous situation until it is too late. Plus, in order for the device to work, the woman must be attacked, so the device does not prevent women from becoming a victim; it only scares attackers from attacking again.

The device may also have unintended consequences. It could fall into the hands of scorned women, who may seduce men into the device. Or over time it may cause men to fear consensual as well as non-consensual sex.

I feel like there should be a better way to address the prevention of rape. Perhaps with education for men and women (boys and girls) and with self defense classes for women and girls.

I want to know what you think about this device? Please share your thoughts in the comments below.

SATC 2 Movie Review

Wednesday, June 16, 2010

Alright. So, it's been a few weeks since I've seen SATC 2 (Sex and the City 2). I've read the reviews (most bad, some good) and I wanted to weigh in on the matter.

Let me begin by saying that I expected to like this movie before I even set foot in the theater. I was instantly a fan of the show from the time that I discovered it (midway into season 2) on HBO; I own all of the SATC seasons on DVD; and I loved Sex and the City- The movie and own that on DVD as well.

So here is my take on the film.

The Good:
  • I loved seeing all of my favorite SATC characters together again.
  • The Fashions!
  • (The best line in the film) Miranda as she addresses the surprise appearance by Ms. Minelli: “It’s a law of physics: any time there’s this much gay energy in a room, Liza manifests.”
  • The scene where Charlotte and Miranda share their gripes about motherhood over martini's.

The Bad:
  • Anthony and Stanford!? Together!? Nonononono! That was never supposed to happen!
  • Speaking of men, where were Big, Steve, Harry, and Smith? They barely got any face time!
  • Too much time in Abu Dhabi! The show is called Sex AND THE CITY because it takes place mostly in NYC!
  • (Worst line in the film) Samantha who refers to her on-screen heartthrob as "Lawrence of my Labia"
The Ugly:
  • I've always been a fan of Carrie Bradshaw, but this movie made me want to bitch slap her! Why is she sneaking off to have dinner with Aiden!? And why would she call Big and risk ending her marriage over a tiny little kiss!? ARG!
  • My biggest gripe of all is that after 2.5 hours, I didn't feel like this movie advanced the characters or the storyline. In "SATC- The Movie" we saw Carrie dump Big and then marry him, Charlotte have a baby, Miranda and Steve break up and get back together, and Samantha finish chemo and decide that she prefers life without a man. In this movie, Stanford and Anthony get married, the girls take a trip to Abu Dhabi, Carrie kisses Aiden, and she thinks Big is mad at her. The second movie doesn't even come close to the action in the first film and I feel like any hardcore SATC fan could have written a juicier story.

In conclusion, did I enjoy the film? Yes. It was a girly fun time. But, I hope to see the characters on the big screen again with more hip fashions, more men and more city.

Did you see the film? What did you think? Let me know in the comments below.

6 mo. Resolution Follow Up

Sunday, June 13, 2010
Many of us made our New Years resolutions at the start of the new year, but how many of us follow up and stick with them? In one of my first posts, Resolutions: Recap and Redo, I shared my new years resolutions from 2008/2009 and my list of 101 is 1001 days. That was 6 months ago, so I thought I would follow up on my resolutions to see how I am doing.

Of my 101 in 1001 days, here's what I've accomplished:

4. Finish the art therapy video

8. Be more physically active. I recently got a gym membership and am taking weekly yoga classes.

9. Take a yoga or tai chi class. See above

11. Keep up with my craft "to-do" list. I was a little overly ambitious with my self-imposed deadlines, but I'm still keeping up.

13. Learn how to read a sewing pattern without help. I'm counting my Frock by Friday even though I did use the Internet for help.

15. Make at least one blog post a week.

18. Finish the Sookie Stackhouse novels.

19. Read one book a month.

26. Visit a friend once every 3 months.

28. Drink red wine.

30. Drink more tea.

48. Hang out at the park when the weather is warm.

53. Spend time with family.

60. Regularly clean out my closet and get rid of clothes I don't/ can't wear.

61. Re-purpose at least 1 clothing item into something new. (see She Steals from Chic Steals)

66. Get a library card

73. Wear more accessories.

74. Set up an official art/craft/ work space at home. It's a work in progress.

79. Go out with The Boy once every 2 weeks.

80. Have a guest over once every 2 weeks.

87. Stay up to date with fashion trends.

92. Floss

99. Keep resume up to date

Total: 23 out of 101

I don't know about you, but I am super excited that True Blood Season 3 is premiering on HBO tonight (June 13th) at 9PM...and I don't even have HBO! I'm sure that I'll find some way to catch the show, and if you have HBO you should check it out too.

While you're waiting for the show to start, be sure to check out the season 3 review on NPR (warning: spoilers included) and check out the minisodes and downloadable posters on HBO.com.

A Frock by Friday

Sunday, June 6, 2010
This week, I have decided to tackle Grosgrain's May Frock by Friday. I know it's June already, but it's not to late to rock a bright, lightweight, floral shirt dress.

I just got my fabric in the mail from Fabric.com. I just love the main fabric! It's called London Calling.

Check back later this week to see the results.

Who Needs a Saved By The Bell Reunion When You've Got California Dreams?

Saturday, June 5, 2010
I'm sure that by now you've all heard about how Jimmy Fallon tried to get a Saved by the Bell reunion together on his show. Mr. Belding showed up, Mario Lopez showed up, and Zack Morris came, but ultimately the whole gang didn't RSVP for the party (Screech!).

Well, this year Jimmy Fallon decided to do a reunion with the next best morning show cast, California Dreams.
