Do you like the band, The Talking Heads? Sure. We all do. Well, did you know that Talking Heads band leader, David Byrne, recently did a collaborative album with St. Vincent? You should really give it a listen. It's a little different, but then again, so are David Byrne and St. Vincent. Best Dress at the Emmy's 2012

Tuesday, September 25, 2012
Did you catch the 2012 Emmy Awards on ABC? Honestly, I barely paid attention to the awards (heard that the big winners were Homeland and surprise surprise- Modern Family), but I did keep my eye out for the best dressed looks of the night. Here's who caught my eye:

Zooey Deschanel in Reem Acra
Christina Hendricks in Christian Siriano
Elisabeth Moss in Dolce & Gabbana
Ginnifer Goodwin in Monique Lhuillier
Kelly Osbourne in Zac Posen
It appeared that the big trends on the red carpet were bright yellow dresses, floral prints, sequins and shades of blue/green. Did you watch the 2012 Emmy's? Who caught your eye that evening? Let me know in the comments below.

What I'm Listening To: Alt-J- Tessellate

Saturday, September 22, 2012

Merriam Webster's dictionary defines the word tessellate as: to form into or adorn with mosaic. Origin:Late Latin tessellatus, past participle of tessellare to pave with tesserae, from Latin tessella, diminutive of tessera.

What happens when you cross Raphael's "School of Athens" painting with a posse straight out of a hip hop video. You get one of the most awesome music videos around (and the song is pretty good, too). So, check out this video and it'll have you singing "triangles are my favorite shape". Trust me!

During Labor Day weekend I went on a solo trip to Texas to visit My Love. I'd never traveled so far by car on my own, so it was a big adventure for me filled with good food, fun and some surprises.
The Peasant Village Restaurant
The Peasant Village Deli and Pastry shop is located in a little house across from Civil Park which houses the International Waterlily Collection. The interior is covered with murals on the walls and lattice and grape vines hang from the ceiling in one room. This place is known for the staff heckling customers to move to the back of the line if they don't know what to order. But the heckling is worth the weight for fabulous sandwiches.
The Chupacabra sandwich
The Chupacabra Sandwich is pure deliciousness- turkey, oven roasted chicken, brie, provolone, remoulade, pesto, lettuce, roasted bell, caramelized onion and tomato on a jalapeño cheddar roll. *drool*
The Ring!
Surprise! I actually visited the International Waterlily collection and rose garden on my own during my first full-day in Texas. But on Sunday, The Boy asked me to take him to the park so that he could see it for himself and while we were there he got down on one knee and proposed! So now I'm engaged!
road trip refreshment
On my way home from Texas I made a pit-stop in Arcadia, Oklahoma to check out Pop's which houses a very large variety of soda pop- from bacon to blueberry and cola to corn flavored. I took home a cup full of Irish Dr. Pepper and a six-pack variety of cream soda, kumquat soda, root beer, Obama blueberry, bacon soda and cucumber soda.
Cucumber Soda
A Flying Donut
This past Friday there were donuts at work from The Flying Donut and they were delicious!
My crocheted vine
Finally, for the past month I have been frantically crocheting granny squares and vines in order to participate in "yarn bombing" the Wichita State University Campus in celebration of the grand re-opening of The Ulrich Museum of Art. Over 180 people participated in the project by creating knitted and crocheted pieces to cover the campus's vast sculpture collection. The "yarn bombing" will be on display until September 23, 2012. If you want to learn more about the project, check out the news segment and/or linked website below.

Previously on Project Runway: Episodes 7 and 8

Episode 7

Previously on Project Runway, the designers participated in the Lord and Taylor challenge. The designers visited the Lord and Taylor flagship store and saw a series of 9 dresses created by designers from past seasons and were asked to create an outfit with the $200-300 price point that would be worthy of representing Project Runway season 10. The winning look would be sold at Lord and Taylor online and in stores. Let's take a look that the designs:

Christopher decided to use his signature fraying/layering technique for the third time. He also decided to take a risk by creating a full-length gown. While the judges mentioned that they're getting tired of seeing the fraying technique and they commented that not many women could pull off this look, the judges also commented that it was a stunning piece and Christopher took home the win this week.

Elena had a rough time trying to create a unique look that met the met the challenge requirements and met her design aesthetic. While I was relieved to see Elena create a look without big shoulders, I felt like Elena chose the wrong fabric for this outfit as her outfit looked cheap. If it were up to me, I would have made Elena safe this week rather than in the top 4.

Fabio had immunity this week as Fabio earned the win the previous week. I thought Fabio's dress was good in the fact that it was versatile and could easily be styled for casual or evening wear, but I felt Fabio's dress was a little boring compared to the rest. I thought Fabio's dress should be safe at best, but the judges felt it was worthy of the top 4.
Melissa decided to jump out of her comfort zone and use a bronze colored fabric rather than black with a unique neckline. Melissa almost had a disaster in the work room as Melissa's sewing fabric initially would not stand up. The judges liked her look, but felt that the long, pointed, asymmetrical hemline was a bit much. Melissa was deservedly in the top 4 and was chosen to be safe this week.

I was surprised to see Dmitry just called as safe. I thought that Dmitry's dress was impeccably made, and it was chic and the piping made the dress very flattering.

Ven decided to incorporate his signature rose motif and fabric manipulation for this challenge. Although Ven's dress was well made as usual, the judges appeared to be getting tired of Ven's motif's and fabric manipulation  based on their comments. I felt that Ven's dress was a little underwhelming compared to the dressed he's already done. The judges kept Ven safe this week.

The judges agreed that Gunnar created a good looking dress. Heck! I'd even wear this one! However, Gunner landed in the bottom because the judges felt like they had seen this outfit a million times, but ultimately the judges deiced to keep Gunnar for another week.

Sonjia's dress was also underwhelming. While peplum is all the rage right now, Sonjia's preplum just fell flat, thus landing Sonjia in the bottom 3. After the deliberation, the judges decided to keep Sonja around for another week.
Alicia had my least favorite look this week as I felt the collar was sloppy, the fabric looked cheap and I wasn't a fan of the overall silhouette. If it were up to me, Alicia would have gone home this week for this outfit.
Recap and Results:  The judges awarded Christopher with the win this week, but decided not to determine a looser and eliminate anybody this week as they felt everyone met the guidelines.

What did you think about the non-elimination? I thought Alicia should have gone home this week since Alicia hasn't created a show stopper all season.

Episode 8

This week on Project Runway, the designers were placed on teams of three and were asked to use their creativity to create items to sell on the street in order to earn their project budget. Then the designers were asked to use their earned budget to create two fall looks featuring outerwear. Let's take a look at the designs:

Team Sonjia, Gunnar, and Christopher:

Chirstopher and Gunnar have been talking alot of trash about each other on camera, so I expected some drama in this episode. But, Christoper and Gunnar were able to put their cattiness aside and were actually able to work together really well. Their teamwork showed in the work as team Sonjia, Gunnar, and Christopher were the clear winning team this week and Sonjia's coat earned Sonjia the win.

Team Dmitry, Elena, and Alicia:

Everyone knew the minute that Dmitry and  Elena were chosen to be on the same team that they were going to butt heads and butt heads they did. Dmitry decided to design a whole look and created one of his signature dresses. While the dress was beautiful, I think everyone is getting tired of seeing Dmitry make dresses. Plus, Dmitry designed a shawl to go over the dress which seemed more like a blanket and was totally confusing. Meanwhile, Elena and Alicia collaborated with the second look and Elena made another oversize, large shouldered coat that was unpolished and unflattering, while Alicia created a boring skinny pant and t-shirt set. Ultimately, the judges felt like Alicia didn't participate enough and they didn't like her clothes, so Alicia was out.
Team Ven, Fabio, and Melissa:

This team earned the biggest budget to work with through the street challenge and every one of them have win's under there belt, so I expected great things from this team. So it was shocking to see this team create the most boring items of the bunch. The tops were throw-aways, the skirt was droopy, the coat looked like an old lady's house coat and the only saving grace was Melissa's interesting collared jacket which ultimately kept this team safe.
Ven and Melissa
Fabio and Ven
Elena and Alicia
What did you think of episode 8? I agreed with the judges pick for the winning/loosing teams, but I would have Eliminated Fabio and/or Ven for their underwhelming outfits.

aka. the L'orial Paris hair challenge.

Previously on Project Runway, the designers were asked to do a makeover (including an new outfit)  for a real client's friend on a $150 budget. Ven sure cranked up the drama this week (and I lost a whole lot of respect for him this week) after he whined and complained about his "plus sized" client and even drove her to tears. If you can't design clothes for everyone, why design clothes at all! On the runway, the top three was a boys club as the ladies appeared to struggle with this challenge.

Gunnar got along fabulously with his client and it showed. He listened to what she wanted and aspired to make her feel like a princess. You should have seen the way she shimmied down the runway! Classic!

Dimitry's dress was impeccably made as was to be expected. He selected a good update for the hair, but I thought his dress was a tad boring for an already demure client. I would have liked to have seen him take her more out of her comfort zone.

Fabio truly understood what his edgy client was looking for- a little more edge in a dress that wasn't too girly. I loved this outfit this dress (and I totally want to steal it from her) and the judges loved it too and crowned Fabio as the winner this week.

Alicia made a feminine outfit! And it's not awful or confusing! It still looks like something that could be picked up at Forever 21 or H&M, but at least the client was happy.
This was not Christopher's best work this week. I like the fabric choice, but it also looks retail. And I'm pretty sure the model and I were in agreement that the jacket was unnecessary.
Melissa covered up her poor dress with a giant shawl. Maybe it was one of the best looks, maybe it was one of the worst, but we'll never know because all we saw was shawl.

Elena stayed away from color and giant shoulder's and surprised s all by giving her client a cute, day to night outfit.

Sonjia struggled with the proportions of her outfit. She attempted to mimic the twisting she'd used in the previous challenge on a petite, athletic framed woman and it just didn't work out. I'm glad she wasn't sent home for this look.
In my opinion, even thought I've liked Ven's work during this competition so far and I didn't mind his look in this challenge, I wouldn't have minded if Ven was sent home this week just based on his outright rudeness to the client. He took a day that was supposed to be fun and uplifting and made his client feel like shit by referring to her as a "plus-sized," complaining that she's at least a size 14, telling her that "black is slimming" and complaining to the other contestants and to the camera about her size. News flash to Ven: The average size for a woman in the U.S is 14. If you can't make clothes for the average woman, why is Ven in the industry!? He really pissed me off this week.
Nathan was asked to create an outfit for his client that she could wear while singing pop/hip-hop songs on stage. I'm not sure why the judges chose to send Nathan home the week. Yes, the fabric choices could have been better and it does look a little cheap, but Nathan delivered what his client asked for and she was pleased. Sometimes the judges are crazy.

What I'm Listening To: GROUPLOVE- Tongue Tied

Saturday, September 1, 2012

I'm sure you've already heard this song before (especially if you've seen any of the Apple I-pod touch ads) and you're probably already in love with it and don't even know it. So give it a listen and you'll finally be able to put a face and band name along with the song in your head.
