Project Runway Season 9 Episode 1 Re-cap

Friday, July 29, 2011
Did you watch the Season 9 premier of Project Runway or were you put off by the ads (see here and here)? Well, if you didn't watch it, you should have. Here's my re-cap of this week's P.R. events:

So, the evening started with a Project Runway casting special where we got a "sneak peak" at the casting for Project Runway season 9 and got to see former cast member's Seth Aaron, Mondo and some others pose as judges. They whittled the masses down to 20 potential cast members for this seasons cast. Oh! And did I mention that one of the cast member is former Ms. Universe contestant from Trinidad and Tobago (she didn't win) Anya Ayoung-Chee who became notorious in 2008 after her 4 part sex tape got leaked!? Yeah. Really.

After watching the casting special, I decided that my top 3 picks were Fallene, Bert and Becky based off of their initial designs. Both Fallene and Becky are rocking the retro/modern chic design aesthetic that I so enjoy and seem like super awesome/fun ladies, and Bert's simple and sleek designs in high quality fabrics looked like top designer quality from the get go.

At the top of episode 1, the 20 contestants were asked to show their initial mini-collections again for the show's judges (Nina Garcia, Michael Kors, and Heidi Klum) + Tim so that they could whittle down the cast immediately from 20 to 16. The judges kicked off Amanda Perna, David Chum, Gunnar Deatherage, and Sarena Da Conceicao. I agreed that Amanda Perna needed to go, but if it were up to me I would have kicked off Cecilia Motwani (even though I'm afraid she'll beat me up for saying it), Kimberly Goldson, Raefael Cox and Joshua McKinley off at the get go.

For their first big challenge, Tim Gunn woke up all of the contestants at 5am and dragged them into the studio dressed in their P.J.'s and blankets and asked them to design an outfit in 1 day using only what they had on and their blanket. Thank goodness no one slept in the buff!

The judge favorites were Anthony Ryan, Anya, and Burt with Burt taking home the win/immunity. Personally, I agreed with Burt and Anya being in the top spots, and I liked Anthony's top but still thought Anthony's skirt looked too much like a pubic skirt. The judges were not thrilled with Julie, Joshua C's and Rafael's outfit and ultimately sent Raefael home-which I agreed with.

All in all, I thought this was a great start to the season and there seems to be a lot of talented people on board. I hope it lives up to Tim Gunn's statement that this will be one of the best seasons in Project Runway history.
