My 2012 Academy Awards Picks
The Boy's 2012 Academy Awards Picks

Tonight is the 2012 Academy Awards. Every year when Oscar time approaches I feel the need to hurry on out to the movie theater to try and see as many Oscar nominated films as I can before the ceremony. This year I was able to see 6 of the 9 nominated films for Best Picture ("The Artist","The Descendants", "The Help", "Hugo", "Midnight in Paris", and "Moneyball". I was also able to see several other films with nominations such as "Beginners", "Bridesmaids", "Kung Fu Panda 2", "Puss in Boots", "Rango", "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" and "Rio" and last weekend, the Boy and I attended a screening of the nominated Animated Shorts, Live Action Shorts, and Documentary Shorts.

Here are some highlights of my picks for tonight. Be sure to check back after the awards for my update on who actually won.

Best Picture:
Although I really liked "Midnight in Paris", I think "The Artist" is taking home the win. Winner: The Artist

Leading Actor:
Since the dog wasn't nominated for this category, my pick is Jean Dujardin in "The Artist" for the win. Winner: Jean Dujardin.

Supporting Actor:
Christopher Plummer was awesome in the "Beginners" and deserves the win. Winner: Christopher Plummer

Leading Actress:
All signs point to Viola Davis taking home the Oscar for "The Help". Biggest upset of the night. Winner: Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady

Supporting Actress:
I think "The Help" is going to do a clean sweep of the actress categories and Octavia Spencer will take home this award. Winner: Octavia Spencer

Animated Feature:
For some reason, the critics really loved "Rango", even though I thought it was a snooze.  My pick is for "Puss in Boots" to take home the win. Winner: Rango

Documentary Short:
Many of these shorts were super emotional and compelling and I had a hard time choosing between "The Barber of Birmingham...", "Incident in New Baghdad" and "Saving Face".  The Boy is choosing "Saving Face", but I'm choosing "Incident in New Baghdad" since the soldier is from my hometown. The Boy was right. Winner: Saving Face.

Animated Short: This is a tough choice between "A Morning Stroll", "La Luna" and "The Fantastic Flying Books...". If the award were just based off of technical and visual creativity, I think "A Morning Stroll" would have this in the bag. "La Luna" is by Disney/Pixar, so it's a given that it is cute and good. But, my pick is for "The Fantastic Flying Books..." which was created in the state of Louisiana and I hope to see more from their studio in the future. Winner: The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore.

Live Action Short Film:
I liked all of the Live Action Short films, but my favorite was "Tuba Atlantic" because I like crotchety old men. Winner: The Shore
